Learn about Jon DeGroot:
I grew up in Bessemer Michigan in the North woods in a family of 4 boys. Got married to a lovely lady that was one of 4 girls. Currently live in Wausau, Wi with my Wife and 2 children, 1 boy 1 girl. Only 2 for now but it won’t be that way for long if my Wife gets her way. I’ve been working in higher education for the past 5 years at Northcentral Technical College and love where my job has taken me. My current title is Flexible Learning Coordinator and I manage our LMS, Lecture Capture, Web Conferencing, our Help Desk and get the freedom to come up with new ideas and turn them into a reality. We’ve been using Relay for the past 3 years and have had outstanding success with it from both the instructor and the student’s side.

An Interview with Jon:
Can you briefly explain what your presentation will be about?
This is my first year presenting at Educause and I will be discussing how important it is to keep things as simple as possible when rolling out a new product such as Camtasia Relay. The fewer hurdles the instructor and student have to jump the more likely they are to use the tool and see how great it is. Once they realize how beneficial it is it can really take off as instructors start sharing it with each other and students begin to request/demand that instructors use it.
What are you looking forward to most at EDUCAUSE?
I’m really looking forward to this year’s Educause and hope to discover some things I’ve never seen or heard about before. It’s really exciting being around so many people that are so passionate about teaching and learning.
If you could watch one presentation at EDUCAUSE, which one would it be?
I took a look through the sessions at Educause and there is just soooo much to see. I’m actually hoping to get to How to Gamify your E-Student Services. I am interested to see how they use game mechanics to make some services and processes more interesting for students as I’m sure I can translate that over to other areas of the college.
