Top Five Ways Educators Use Screencast.com

Here’s a quick list of popular ways in which educators are leveraging the privacy of Screencast.com and how it’s easy to get your content from a TechSmith product to Screencast.com where designated people can view it.

  • Host instructional videos and provide links to parents and students. Parents and students can view the videos 24/7.
  • Create a MediaRoll that is hosted on the class or school webpage. The MediaRoll is automatically updated when videos are uploaded to the corresponding folder.
  • Have students use Jing to explain a concept. These Jing videos or images are shared with just the teacher, the class, or maybe the world. Here’s an example: http://mrshedge.squarespace.com/.
  • Host classroom “lectures” or any type of instruction or presentation with Camtasia Relay. Just record, and Camtasia Relay does all the processing. When the video is done, you’re emailed the link to where it’s hosted on Screencast.com.
  • Host files (attachments) such as PowerPoint presentations, Word documents, and PDFs. Selected people are able to download the materials.

Have you tried Screencast.com in education? What tips do you have?

I would like to use Screencast as a training tool. I want to assign logins to each student but know that they logged in to watch the videos.

Can that be done with Sceeencast? If so, how?

    Thank you, in advance

    Hello James,
I’m afraid this cannot be accomplished as of today. It sounds like you bring up two great feature requests though. For part one, there should be some kind of “admin” account management functionality. This has come up before and I think there is some interest in this.

The next part sounds like some kind of tracking or LMS-like functionality. I’m not exactly sure how that might play out, but if you have any more ideas on either topic, please pass them on.

Better yet, we have a public feedback site: http://feedback.techsmith.com. This can be nice because it’s easier for us to track customer feedback here as well as give other customers a chance to pile on the bandwagon.

    Thanks for posting!

These are all great ways for educators to use Screencast. I think that it would be great to have the students become more involved in the video production. Have any educators used something like Cantaloupe TV to allow their students to manage their own videos? It would be an interesting way to allow students to develop, produce and manage their own videos for classroom projects.

I love the features! I am currently thinking of buying a simple camera in order to use screencast to upload some lectures for my students, but at the same time I am worried about the security of doing so. Is it safe to assume that our data is protected from unauthorized viewers?

I believe that sites like screencast.com are making teaching much more advanced than years ago. While there are benefits of using the internet to teach and display content to students, educators must also remember that not every student has access to the internet and has a computer at home.
