Audio FAQs

Hello everyone,

Lately we’ve seen an increase in audio-related issues and questions. I thought I would summarize some of the key points and leave you with some links and resources for additional help.

Does Jing record audio with video? Absolutely. If your microphone isn’t working, something’s wrong. Jing looks for the default audio input device. Usually that’s the microphone. Check your Control Panel (Windows) or System Preferences (Mac) and make sure that the default audio input device is your microphone. If you need help, try the topics and people at TechSmith Tech Support. Here’s a link to their Jing topics.

Can I record my system audio? Jing can usually record system audio. Why the italics? Well, especially with Windows Vista there are a lot of “if’s” and conditions based on your sound card and more. Keep in mind though–for both Windows and Mac, Jing was not really designed to capture system audio. We focused on voice capture and keeping the audio files small. I want to also make clear that you can’t switch back and forth between microphone and system audio once you start recording.

Here are two posts that explain more:

If you’re the kind of person who’s interested in doing a lot of more advanced audio work and want to really be in control, you could research some kind of mixer that would work with your computer. Here’s just one example.

I just installed on Vista 64 bit Ultimate and wanted to do a test video on iTunes Genious. While the system audio didn’t work (it didn’t pickup the iTunes song playing directly), my mic picked up the song coming out of my laptop speakers which made it a fun background noise instead of drowning out my voice. Nice product guys – who thought SnagIt could be beat?!

    Gotta love Vista!
Thanks for Jing. It’s pretty sweet. :-)

I just wanted to give my two cents regarding the Jing program. I just recently downloaded the software and it really works great! I love how simple and user friendly the program can be. It will definitely be an important asset for my internet marketing career, thanks guys and keep up the good work!

Can Jing be used to video activity in Second Life? Please advise. We plan workshops there and need to video them in some practical way.

Also, can Jing files be posted on YouTube?

    Thanks!

    Hi Richard,
Jing should be able to record Second Life but there are a couple of things to look out for. One, the file size, because of all that on-screen motion, will likely be huge. Secondly, depending on the resolution of your screen and how powerful your computer is, you’ll get some degree of jerkiness and dropped frames.

Jing video files are in SWF format which is great for some things like works well when viewed on the web, good quality, and royalty-free. However SWF has its downsides…one of which is that no YouTube (or YouTube-like site) support.

Thanks for your feedback. We hope you’ll keep an eye on Jing as it evolves.

HOW DO I SEARCH FOR AUDIO?

    DON’T SEE ANY RELEVANT DISPLAY.

AFTER INSTALLING – NO SUN ANYWHERE.

    THANKS.

Jing works fine, except the sound. I do not get any sound while recording the video. Obviously it is a common problem with JING as I can see here in the blog. But I cannot see any help or answer to this problem?? Who can help?
