Camtasia Studio 8: New Grouping Tutorials

Hug Your Timeline - Group Today!

If you’ve yet to use the new grouping feature in Camtasia Studio 8, you might be missing out. It’s truly one of the most helpful tools for effective timeline organization. To demonstrate grouping’s usefulness, I present you with Introduction to Grouping (2:08) – a basic grouping walkthrough. Give it a watch and see how grouping can be a great addition to your workflow.

Once you have a handle on the basics, check out Applying Animations Across a Series of Clips (4:04) – an advanced tutorial that demonstrates how group-level animations can help out users who employ a lot of splits in their videos.

Not a Camtasia pro, but want to be? We can help. Is there another topic you’d like to see covered in a tutorial? Let us know in the comments below or at feedback.techsmith.com

I wish I had know how to do this before my last project! This is great stuff! More videos please!

Excellent – well done – It took meawhile to figure out groups – to bad I didn’t see the video first – but your video did point out some features of grouping I didn’t know – Thanks for sharing. I’ll become a master Cantasia Studio 11.1 user – I can see it in my future.

Groups are very handy for keeping things tidy. I’ve started using them when things get more complex.

I’d love it if future versions allowed transitions to work properly across grouped content. At the moment it seems like only Fade Through Black or similar ones which never overlap or crossfade the two parts will work properly. Transitions where the two parts are both visible at once will only show one of the tracks in the group on the other side of the transition. (Or something like that.) Can be worked around by rendering to a temporary video and importing that, but that’s a pain and messes up the workflow.

Thanks for the feedback, Leo. The grouping feature is something that is constantly being evaluated since it is new to the software. I will deliver your thoughts to the development team.

I have recorded a voice narration to insert / replace an existing portion of my recorded voice. I see it in my recording but how do I insert it so I only hear my voice for the new portion?

    • jholnagel

It sounds like you need to separate the audio from the video in your original recording. To do that, right-click on the .camrec (on the timeline) and then choose “separate audio and video”. From there, you should be able to cut out or silence the audio you are looking to replace.

Once I save a file as a WMV, is there a way to recreate the .camproj version

    • jholnagel

Producing your video (to any format) should not delete the .camproj. Are you saying that after production, your .camproj disappears.

    Great Tut…thanks for sharing Josh!

Thanks for this video. This helped me out a little bit more. I recently started a new project with 8 and was really confused with the whole grouping thing and couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong. So the take-away here is to not group until you’re pretty much finished with the editing. Then, as required, group the clips and apply the effects as required to the entire group.

I’m going to play with this feature some more. I’m sure you’ve received more feedback on user experience with groups. Are you planning to put out another “grouping” video so we can see what other tips and tricks (or workaround) you have with this new feature? That would be great. Thanks.
