Rethinking How You Use the Canvas and Timeline in Camtasia Studio 8

Camtasia Studio 8 was released to the world at large last week, and WOW what a release it is! Having spent hundreds of hours in previous versions (from v.4), version eight is absolutely the best and most enjoyable I’ve used.

Two of the biggest changes in this version are the revamped canvas and timeline–and those are where the best changes are. We think both veteran and brand new users alike will want to take a moment to figure out how they can take advantage of the new flexibility and power in the new timeline and canvas.

To that end, we’ve created a couple of video tutorials that will help you understand not just how to use the new canvas and timeline, but more importantly, how you’ll need to think about your video on them:

Did we miss something, or fail to make everything clear? Or perhaps we did a fantastic job? Let us know in the comments below.

Thanks for the Canvas tutorial. With all the great new features, I forgot about how you can now rotate media – perfect for some concert footage where I’d filmed a giant screen… in portrait instead of landscape. Duh! Camtasia 8 made it unbelievably easy to first split the clip where I’d rotated the camera, then rotate the portrait footage back into landscape. Now I can enjoy the Foo Fighters without flipping my head ;-)

Great use of the new features to illustrate the new features! I loved the animations explaining the relationship between display order on the canvas and track stacking on the timeline. That’s a very nice bit of instructional design!

Wow! Thanks for the excellent overview on CS8!! I was a bit leery at first when I saw the changes…you are correct in that I needed to “rethink” how I worked with it. Very exciting and can’t wait to learn more!
